Jambut

"Fun For Bri Beyond The Dutch Door ca. 1973"

After hiking the Bashakill on Sunday, we stopped at a favorite little teahouse for lunch, where the owner creates everything from scratch, using healthy ingredients. The board menu included Stuffed-Pepper Soup, a dish that came highly recommended by an enthusiast at another table.

A delicious combination of lean ground beef, rice, green peppers, garlic, onions, carrots, tomatoes and probably chicken broth, was lightly seasoned to perfection... very hearty; a mugful was quite satisfying. Sooooooooooo...

Yesterday, out of my fridge came some leftovers: a thick ground turkey-tomato sauce; a half box of Pomì's; a couple of plain, steamed frying peppers; chicken broth; garlic... you've got the gist... cooked up a few broken angel hair noodles... added some oregano, parsley and freshly ground pepper... yum!

About two hours after dinner, I experienced a light-bulb moment, in remembering Gran's cooking. I can picture her at the stove in Massapequa, with the Dutch-door half opened to an awesome view of our little lake, as she blended together a week's worth of leftovers. "What are you making, Gran?" She'd reply, "Delicious jambut , Honey." When I say we ate well, I do not exaggerate. Leftovers came together in a stew-like jumble... aromatic soul food.

Mom confirmed my memory, and we shared a chuckle. Then, we discussed the possibilities for versions of stuffed-pepper soup.

Loving GranBuon Appetito.
