Monday night. Joe and I happened upon the new Showtime series, "The Big C". We really liked the first episode; I suspect that we're hooked. Laura Linney's character was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. With such devastating news, she decided to lose her sedate, subservient self and transform into a live-it-up, no-holds-barred biotch... the rest of her life would unfold her way! Great stuff.
*SPOILER* if you intend to watch
She had kicked her loving-but-childish-and-self-centered husband out of the house; he knew not of her diagnosis. He was shocked, miserable and desirous of reentry. In one fantastic scene, she held up an onion and at the same time screamed to him that she "...loves onions, but had not eaten one in fifteen years..." because he hated onions, and she was in the habit of catering to him, as she neglected her own desires. He got the message. To win her back, he reappeared with a Vidalia and took an enormous bite from it, demonstrating his willingness to change his ways just to please her.
*SPOILER" ended
Okay, so a blankety-blank onion can say a lot. You know, it's in the vein of the toothpaste tube gone crooked. We've all been there over one issue or another; but we work hard to keep our unions whole. Enough on the soapbox; back to onions... but before I descend, did you notice the one-letter difference between the two words?
Here's last night's throw-it-together recipe for
Stovetop Turkey Burgers:
Start lots of sliced Vidalias in a large pan, seasoning with paprika, garlic powder and freshly ground pepper. Use oil or PAM spray, as you wish. When about halfway translucent and carmelized, add burgers made of the following mixture, sizing to your liking:
1 pound of lean, ground turkey
2 wedges of Laughing Cow light Swiss
1 egg
1 T Grey Poupon Deli Mustard w/Horseradish
Panko breadcrumbs
After you've cooked till browned on one side, turn; now top each with a little ketchup. Finish cooking slowly and thoroughly (remember, it's poultry). At this point, I use a wooden spoon on one side of the pan to hold a cover up for venting.
Mound on those onions, upon serving. This dish reheats very well.
Buon Appetito
